Hello lovely readers! I’m so happy you found your way here!
I’m Chelle, a lifestyle portrait photographer based in West Yorkshire. I mainly work with families with children of all ages. My style is not widely offered or known in the area and I want to explain exactly what it is that I do. I thought this would be a good idea for my first blog post!
When it comes to family, children, maternity and newborn photography, two of the different styles are Lifestyle Photoshoots and Studio Photoshoots. While both have their merits, they are distinct in their approach. In this blog post, I’ll explain what lifestyle photography is and how it differs from studio photography.
What Is Lifestyle Photography?
Lifestyle photography aims to capture real-life moments in a natural and unobtrusive way. It's a genre that embraces candidness and authenticity, focusing on people and their surroundings. Here's what makes it unique:
Natural Environments:
Lifestyle photographers shoot in natural settings, such as homes, parks, streets, or any location that is meaningful to the client. The goal is to show people in their familiar surroundings, where they can relax and be themselves.
Candid Moments:
Unlike studio photography, lifestyle photography thrives on candid moments. It's about capturing genuine expressions, interactions, and emotions. Whether it's a child's laughter, a couple's gaze, or the chaos of a family dinner, lifestyle photography tells the unscripted stories of life.
Storytelling:
Lifestyle photography is all about storytelling. It aims to document a moment in time, creating a narrative that resonates with viewers. It's about capturing the essence of a person or family and their unique story, filled with quirks, laughter, and love.
Minimal Poses:
In lifestyle photography, you won't find elaborate poses or artificial setups. The focus is on the subject's natural movements and interactions, which create a sense of authenticity and relatability. I personally prefer to capture real moments when children are busy being themselves, so I rarely ask them to even look at the camera! If they choose to, that’s great!
How Does Lifestyle Photography Differ from Studio Photography?
Now that I have explained what lifestyle photography is, let's explore how it differs from studio photography:
Settings:
Studio photography takes place in a controlled environment with artificial lighting and backdrops. In contrast, lifestyle photography uses natural settings that are meaningful to the subjects.
Posing:
Studio photography often involves carefully posed shots with controlled expressions and lighting. Lifestyle photography, as mentioned earlier, prioritizes candid and natural moment
Lighting:
Studio photographers have complete control over lighting, which can result in highly polished and consistent images. Lifestyle photographers usually work with natural light, which can lead to varied and sometimes imperfect lighting conditions, but it adds to the authenticity.
Atmosphere:
Studio photography is ideal for achieving a specific mood, look or result, for example, posed newborn shoots. . Lifestyle photography, on the other hand, thrives on capturing the atmosphere of the moment, making it well-suited for storytelling.
Authenticity:
While Lifestyle photography is chosen for its authenticity, Studio photography aims for a more polished and idealised look.
In conclusion, lifestyle photography and studio photography each have their own unique appeal and serve different purposes. Lifestyle photography excels at capturing real, spontaneous moments in a natural environment, while studio photography offers control over lighting and backgrounds for a more controlled and stylised look. The choice between the two depends entirely on your preference, the story you want to tell, the style and the emotions and you aim to evoke in your photographs. So, whether it's the charm of everyday life or the polished studio aesthetics, both have their place in the world of photography, offering diverse ways to capture the beauty of the world around us!
