As a family photographer, I know how much parents love to capture special moments with their little ones. While I adore working with families, I also know that some of the most precious memories happen in every day life, wether it’s playtime in the park, at a family gathering , or those quiet moments at home.

You, don’t need professional equipment to capture beautiful photos with your children, phones are such powerful tools these days! With a few simple tips and techniques, you can take frame worthy photos no matter where you are.

Read on to get the most out of your phone camera!

Get on their level

One of the most common things parents do is take a photo of their children from an adults height. It seems natural to snap a quick photo from above, but getting down on your child’s level creates a much more engaging perspective. Also, if your phone camera has a ‘portrait mode’, switch to that! Wait for it to focus on your child’s nearest eye.

Example: If your child is playing with toys on the floor, crouch or lay down so your camera is at eye level with them. This makes the photo feel more personal and allows you to capture their expressions and emotions up close.

Find natural light

Lighting is everything in photography, and this holds true for phone photography as well! Natural light is your friend—try to avoid using the phone’s flash as it can be harsh and unflattering. Instead, find soft, natural light by positioning your child near a window or taking them outside during the early morning or late afternoon when the sunlight is softer.

Example: If your child is playing near a window, use the window light to softly illuminate their face. Make sure the light is falling on them from the side or front.

Capture candid moments

Some of the best photos happen when your kids are just being themselves. Instead of always trying to get them to pose, let them play and explore. Capture the moments when they’re laughing, being silly, or deep in thought. Candid photos often feel the most authentic and tell a story.

Example: If your child is playing in the backyard, let them run around while you snap photos. Catch them mid-giggle, jumping, or interacting with a pet. These spontaneous moments will make for natural, joyful images.

Focus on the details

Sometimes the little details- messy curls after a long day of play, or their feet kicking in the air—can tell a story all on their own. Zoom in or move closer to highlight these small but significant moments.

Example: Take a close-up shot of your child's hand holding a dandelion or their little toes in the sand at the beach. These intimate details can evoke strong emotions and add variety to your photo collection.

Avoid or move distractions

When taking photos of your kids, pay attention to what’s in the background. A cluttered or distracting background can take the focus away from your child. Look for simple, clean backgrounds that allow your child to be the star of the photo!

Example: If you're indoors, choose a plain wall or a tidy part of the room. If you’re outside, use the sky, a field, or a simple fence as the backdrop to keep the focus on your child.

Be patient

Kids aren’t always in the mood for photos, and that’s okay! The best photos often come when they’re relaxed and having fun. So, instead of asking them to stop, look and smile, be ready to capture them when they’re in their element.

Example: If your child is playing happily, keep your phone camera ready but don’t interrupt. Let them be themselves and wait for the right moment to snap a picture. The more relaxed they are, the better your photos will turn out!

With these simple tips, you can capture stunning, meaningful moments that you and your family will cherish for years to come. The key is to stay patient, have fun, and embrace the little imperfections that make each photo uniquely yours.
